Microlenders, Not Banks, Are Making More Small Company Loans
The small company loan crisis has been getting some relief with microloans. Developing countries have benefited one of the most from microloans thus far. Partisan politics thwart small company lending
As microlenders take action to help small businesses, the Americas Senate is sitting on its hands. Bloomberg reports that because senate Democrats failed to get the votes required to advance beyond debate, a bill written to loosen small business credit perished July 29. To motivate small business lenders, the bill proposed funneling $ 30 billion to banks with less than $ 10 billion in assets. The cost to pay back that cash would drop for a financial institution as its number of small business loans rose. The small business loan package had been estimated to stimulate up to $ 300 billion in lending. But Republicans attempted to tack an indefinite extension of the Bush tax cuts to the bill, even as they said it would encourage another round of risky lending.
Microlending success stories
Microlending is growing because small businesses aren’t waiting for Congress to get its act together. The New York Times article tells the story of a restaurant owner in Silicon Valley who saved her business with a $ 6,500 loan that she has 3 years to pay back that carries a 6 percent rate of interest.As reported in the Miami Herald, Miami microlender OUR MicroLending has infused $ 4.5 million into the Miami economy with 764 loans. Customers of OUR MicroLending typically have annual sales of $ 100,000 or less with fewer than five employees. The loans made by OUR MicroLoans average about $ 5,000 and fall within a $ 1,500 to $ 12,000 range.
