The Lost Art Of Gift Giving
The gifts my husband and I got at our wedding were what we expected. Literally. It was, after all, the stuff we registered for. No surprises there. But there is something a little bit sad about opening gifts you expect to get. I’m not trying to say that gift registries are a bad idea. On the contrary, they have helped avoid many embarrassing moments. For example, one time my friend got an anodized cookware set. She was thrilled! Until she opened two more. It was a really awkward moment for her and her guests.
So gift registries developed as a way to make sure you were giving the person something they actually wanted, and without worrying about getting something they already had. The problem is, that gift-giving has become too easy. We just go to the store, look at the list, pay for the item, and we’re done. There’s no thought put into it. Isn’t it the thought that counts?
The fact that gift-giving had become an empty act didn’t hit me until my new husband and I were putting away all the wedding gifts we had gotten. Bowls, pretty silver frames, cookware and bedding, they were all very nice. But my husband was obsessed with one gift. His cousin had gotten him an Alvarez acoustic guitar.
His cousin remembered he wanted one, and took the time and effort to get one rather than just fall back on the registry gifts! It certainly would have been easier, especially because my husband’s cousin (like many men) hated to shop. But that one gift meant more to my husband than any present he had been given in a long time.
At that moment I also realized I was dying to get my hands on a gift my sister gave me. It was a box full of scrapbooking stuff. Beautiful scrapbooking papers, rubber stamps, pretty ribbon, paper punches, and so much more. I could not wait until I got all this other stuff put away so I could start creating scrapbook pages of our wedding photos.
My sister know how much I loved scrapbooking and she took the time to get me something she knew I would enjoy a great deal. The point is that these gifts were personal, and the only ones we really treasured. And as much as I can appreciate a registry, if getting a few extra diaper pails at my baby shower means on the other hand I’ll get thoughtful gifts, I’ll take the risk.
So next time you go gift shopping, try thinking about the person and what they might like. If you really do not know them well or you are typically terrible at gift-giving, by all means, get something from their gift registry. If you do know them well try not to fall back on what’s easy. Chances are, if you really think about the person and your relationship with them, you’ll come up with the perfect gift. One they will truly be excited about and remember always.
