Basketball Hoop Backboards
One of the most important parts of a basketball hoop is the backboard. It’s primarily what separates the low-end from the high-end systems. The backboards found on the pricey models are larger, stronger, and thicker. They look appear and perform similar to the ones you see in gyms.
Shape
Rectangle and fan-shape are the two shapes backboards come in. The latter is primarily found on the cheapest models, such as ones that are designed for kids. The rectangle is preferred because they provide more room and are better for bank shots. Not to mention that they are more realistic, since they simulate what you would play on in most gyms.
Size
The size of a backboard pretty much correlates with the price tag. The bigger the backboard, the more expensive the hoop will be. The regulation size is 72″ across, which is what you see in the NCAA and NBA. When buying a hoop, the objective is to get the largest sized backboard you can afford. They begin at 42″ across on the entry-level models. This is pretty small, and is only practical for children under 10 years old. For children 10 years on up, you want to look for a size at least 50″ on up.
You also have to consider how big your playing space is. Let’s say for example that you have a 2 2 car driveway. The rule of thumb for this space is a backboard between 54″ and 60″. If you went bigger, then it would look too big based on the amount of space available. If it were any smaller, then it might look to small.
Material
The material is also rather important. Tempered glass is the best you can buy. This is what you will find in gyms all over. It’s the most durable and rigid of all materials. If you want a system with a glass backboard, be prepared to spend around a thousand dollars or more. With that said, it will money well spend considering the quality.
Less models with likely either have polycarbonate or acrylic, with the latter becoming more and more common.
Polycarbonate is the stronger of the two, and is more than suitable in most cases. It’s pretty durable, and has a similar look to glass. Though, it’s not as durable or rigid as glass.
