St. Christopher's Medallion: What Is Its True Meaning?
St. Christopher medals have been worn since as long ago as the Middle Ages. In the 14th century, in The Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer referred to the Knight's Yeoman as dressed in “A Cristopher on his breast of silver sheen." Quite simply, the Yeoman wore a silver St. Christopher medallion that dangled on his breast and provided the finishing touch to this character's physical appearance.
But what does the medal actually mean? Well, the answer will depend on who wears it!
Medals, medallions, and cards with St. Christopher's name and persona on them usually are worn as pendants, particularly by travelers who want to show their commitment and request for his blessing throughout their journey. Miniature statues tend to be exhibited in motor cars, and medallions are often clipped car visors, as well. People who use the medal by doing this would like to convey their dedication to St. Christopher and seek his grace while they drive today's fast paced, high-speed motorways.
The medallion depicts a bearded, middle-aged man. On his shoulders sit a child which represents Christ, and in his hand is a staff. The wording "Svts. Christophorvs Protector Noster," which means "Saint Christopher Our Protector" circles the medallion.
In French culture, a common saying is "Regarde St Christophe et va-t-en rassure" ("Look at St Christopher and go on reassured"); In Spanish, the inscription on medals and holy cards is "Si en San Cristobal confias, de accidente no morirs" ("If you trust St. Christopher, you won't die in an accident").
In addition to being recognized as the patron saint of travelers, St. Christopher is regarded as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, a group of saints venerated jointly in Roman Catholicism because their intercession is considered to be effective, especially against illnesses. Because of this, his medallion carries the promise of vibrant health and well-being for many people who wear it to take saintly intervention in their lives.
In the Dark Ages people turned to him for protection against the plague and pestilence. Today, his name is invoked against illnesses.
Considering that St. Christopher is viewed as a protector, he holds patronage against pestilence, lightening, stormy weather and flooding, too!
