Why Is Valentine’s Day February 14th?
Saint Valentine’s Day, more typically referred to Valentine’s Day is on February 14th.
Pope Gelasius announced February 14 St. Valentine’s Day around the year 498 A.D.
Saint Valentine is the name of 14 martyred saints of ancient Rome. It was given with the meaning worthy, strong and dynamic to the receivers. The name Valentine was popular in Late Antiquity. Of the Saint Valentine whose is celebrated on Feb 14, nothing is understood aside from his name and that he was buried at the Via Flaminia, North of Rome on February 14. It is even doubtful whether the feast of that day celebrates just one saint or more saints of the same name.
Later on in the Middle Ages, it was frequently trusted in France and England that Feb 14th was the start of birds ‘ breeding season, which added to the idea that the middle of February — Valentine’s Day — should be a day for romance.
The history of Valentine’s Day — and its patron saint — is a puzzle. But we do know that Feb has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine’s Day, as we all know it today, contains remnants of both Christian and traditional Roman convention.
On St Valentine’s Day in 1400 a court is opened in Paris, the Supreme Court of Love, dealing with affairs of the love and heart: wedding contracts, divorces, adultery, and abused wives. The Judges were selected by women on the premise of a poetry reading..
Valentines Day has come a long way and is now seen by some as a commercial free-for-all driving big sales of chocolate, flowers and jewelry. With more conventional customs such as love notes, and Valentines poetry.
When it comes to a special date with the one you love, you have to wear your heart on your sleeve, be it on Valentine’s Day or any other. Valentine’s Day just makes everything seem rosier.
Whatever contradictions or differences arise from the various legends or stories surrounding Valentines day, the one constant remains the date – 14th February.
