EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FRESH FLOWER CORSAGES

 Wedding trends may come and go and dress styles at school formals change each year, but wearing a beautiful corsage or buttonhole never goes out of fashion.

It’s a tradition that dates back centuries yet it remains firmly in place at modern celebrations and formal occasions. 

The accepted place to wear a corsage is pinned to the right-hand lapel, but different ways of wearing corsages are becoming more popular, such as around the wrist, in the hair, attached to the handbag or purse etc.   At weddings, corsages are usually worn by the mother of the bridge, the mother of the groom, the grandmothers and other important female guests. 

The buttonhole is worn on the left lapel, and generally comprises a single flower bloom such as a rose, carnation or orchid.  These are either pushed through the buttonhole – hence the name, or pinned on the jacket.  Buttonholes are worn by the VIP males at the wedding, including the groom, the best man, the ushers and the fathers and grandfathers of the bride and groom. 

The tradition is for the girls going to the prom to present their partners with a buttonhole whilst the buys present the girls with a corsage.

At weddings, corsages are usually chosen to co-ordinate with the outfit of the wearer whilst buttonholes complement the existing colour theme.

The old-fashioned way (but still in fashion) of making a corsage was to wire together a few larger fresh flowers (eg orchids, roses etc) with some delicate foliage and smaller flowers (eg gypsophila), and to tie them together with silk ribbon and fasten with a pearl-topped pin. 

Corsages may be old-fashioned but they are always getting a modern twist and creativity is the big trend, says a specialist in fresh flower delivery in Perth.  These days, florists are using a variety of interesting materials such as pearls, organza, feathers, ribbon, crystals, diamante and lace together with realistic silk flowers to create stunning corsages and wristlets that can be kept as special mementos.  Magnets are also being used in preference to pins, so that beautiful outfits can be damaged by the pins.

Your local fresh flower delivery specialist will be able to advise on what fresh flowers are most suitable for a corsage or buttonhole – and don’t be afraid of looking beyond the traditional roses and orchids.  Always check whether the wearer is allergic to pollen or fragrance, and then ask your florist to make up the arrangement accordingly – and that’s where silk flowers really shine.

If you’re very organised, why not give the florist a swatch of the dress fabric, so that the colour schemes can be a perfect match?.  The ‘ball season’ and the spring ‘wedding season’ are very busy times for florists, so it’s always a god idea to get in early.

When it comes to caring for your fresh flowers, the Perth florist suggests placing a moist cotton cloth over the stems before placing them in a sealed cellophane bag in the fridge.  Keep the flowers away from ripening fruit (which can give off a gas which causes the blooms to age prematurely) and spritz with a fine mist of water to refresh them if necessary.  Handle very gently to avoid bruising the blooms.  They may be an age old tradition, but corsages will always be part of new-age celebrations.
