CORSAGES AND BUTTONHOLES – THE BEST IDEAS
Even though fashions change each season, and styles at weddings, balls and high-school proms come and go, the age-old custom of wearing a buttonhole or corsage with a formal outfit remains firmly in vogue.
The tradition of wearing of a flower corsage for women and a buttonhole (from the French word boutonniere) dates back centuries, yet still has a place at modern celebrations.
The accepted place to wear a corsage is pinned to the right-hand lapel, but different ways of wearing corsages are becoming more popular, such as around the wrist, in the hair, attached to the handbag or purse etc. Corsages at weddings are generally worn by the bride’s mother, the groom’s mother, grandmothers as well as other female VIPs.
The buttonhole is worn on the left hand side of the outfit, and is usually made of flowers that complement the corsages, but are much smaller, comprising a single rose, orchid, carnation or other flower bound with some foliage. These are either pinned on the lapel of the jacket or pushed through the buttonhole. Buttonholes are worn by the VIP males at the wedding, including the groom, the best man, the ushers and the fathers and grandfathers of the bride and groom.
The tradition is for the girls going to the prom to present their partners with a buttonhole whilst the buys present the girls with a corsage.
With regards to colour schemes, the colour of the wearer’s outfit usually dictates what the corsages and buttonholes will look like, but it’s generally accepted that they should complement each other.
Typically, a corsage comprised three main fresh flowers which were wired together with some foliage and smaller flowers (often gypsophila, miniature carnations etc) with loops of silk ribbon and attached by a pearl pin.
However, according to a leading florist in Perth, creativity is the big trend with these traditional flower accessories. Florists are using a number of different materials to create gorgeous corsages and beautiful wristbands that can be kept as special mementos, and these include silk flowers, pearls, lace, organza, feathers, diamante, crystal, ribbon and feathers. They are also using magnets instead of pins to attach the corsages, thereby eliminating the possibility of damaging the fabrics of the outfits.
A professional florist such as the florist in Perth will advise on the best flowers to use for corsages and buttonholes, with traditional favourites being roses, carnations, orchids and fragrant freesias. However, it is important to remember that some people may be allergic to pollen and fragrance, so always check first and then the florist will make up the arrangements accordingly.
If you’re very organised, why not give the florist a swatch of the dress fabric, so that the colour schemes can be a perfect match?. The ‘ball season’ and the spring ‘wedding season’ are very busy times for florists, so it’s always a god idea to get in early.
And when you’ve got your beautiful corsage, you want to keep them that way for as long as possible, so take the advice of the Perth online florist and place a moist cotton cloth over the stems (not the blooms) and then place in a sealed plastic bag in the fridge. They can also be spritzed with a fine mist of water, and should be kept away from fruit which can give off a gas which causes flowers to age prematurely. And always – handle with care.
