One such Cultural Event is the “Sri Dalada Perehera”. Also known as the Esala Perehara, happening in July or August in Kandy, it has become a symbol of Sri Lanka. It is a Buddhist festival consisting of music, dances and nicely decorated elephants. There are fire-dances, whip-dances, Kandian dances and various other cultural dances. The beautiful decorations and jewellery on the elephants are astonishing to watch. The festival comes to an end with the traditional ‘diya-kepeema’ which is like the “Closing Ceremony” of the festival.
Another major tourist attraction in the hill-top Capital is the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens. The origins of the Botanic Gardens dates as far back as 1371 when King Wickramabahu III ascended the throne and kept court at Peradeniya near Mahaweli river this was followed by King Kirti Sri and King Rajadhi Rajasinghe. Evidence of the destroyed ancient template can be found which was built by King Wimala Dharma Suriya. Then plan were laid out to form a botanical garden in 1821.The gardens came under the administration of the Department of Agriculture when it was established in 1912. The Botanical Gardens is at it’s best during the Summer (i.e March to May/early June), with all sorts of exotic flowers and trees in bloom. Flora and fauna of the botanical garden contains lots of endemic and foreign plants and trees and a researchers paradise.
Ending the war means Sri Lanka has a golden opportunity to be in the lime light. The Island paradise is always among the spot light of the enthusiasts who are looking for a rich experience to pleasure. The brings the attention to the lack of tourism infrastructure which has a large niche where opportunities are available to new investors. Land in sri lanka is renowned for its fertility. Furthermore some areas are planted with Cardamom etc. Altogether there are 4 water streams running across the estate and two of the streams could easily be dammed in order to produce hydro-power. Bungalow, office-building as well as workers-accommodation are in place. The estate has no tea factory, but is an area where one could be built ideally.
