A Guide to Decorative Concrete
Those who want something more special than dull flooring can go for decorative concrete. You may actually get a tiled floor without using real tiles, among other things, by using decorative concrete. Flooring has benefited greatly from the development of decorative concrete. Concrete is a material that has long been associated with strength. A good number of the oldest structures in the world are crafted out of concrete. The Romans, for instance, were innovators in concrete usage, and they certainly employed the material often. Since then, people didn’t need to rely on heavy stones and bricks, and were free to make unique, creative and elaborate architectural designs. Because concrete takes well to molding, it is a great material for unusual shapes and constructions. Hence, architecture was never the same after this substance was introduced. There is typically more concrete in a building than there is wood, glass, or iron. Of course, every part of the building is important, and has to work with the rest for a truly strong and handsome whole. Even so, it is highly likely that the parts of the structures of today that shall remain long after we are gone shall be the ones built out of concrete. Decorative concrete can be made through several processes. Many builders offer processes such as pattern-creation through molds and stamps, resurfacing, stain application, and the like. These procedures are ideal for people who want to make concrete look better while retaining its strength. Even if you have minimal experience in it, stamping is quite doable as a DIY project. You just need a bit of construction knowhow as well as some of the traditional tools for the technique. You may try doing it on your own if you wish to save money by avoiding hiring a contractor. To stamp a concrete floor means to add texture or color so that it resembles stone, brick, or slate. You may even hire a pro if you want some special texture, such as grainy wood. A mold is typically used for this work, to simplify the process and make patterns uniform. You may also stain your concrete to contribute to the effect. There is a window of opportunity for extra work on the texture as long as the concrete is still wet. It is wiser to hire a specialist if you do not know what you are doing, of course. On the other hand, you may find acid staining easier to do. During concrete repair or just before you finish laying a new floor, apply a mixture of water, mineral salt and a tiny amount of muriatic acid on the concrete surface; let it stay for about 4 hours until you see the acid designs produced from a chemical reaction. It is of prime importance that you are aware, if you try to do this yourself, that the acid used here is very dangerous. Decorative concrete may be achieved through many other processes, all making your home appealing and unique. There are so many possibilities, from resurfacing to detailed stampwork. Gone are the days when concrete floor was just a plain, boring white-grayish surface.
