Pearls are one of the stunning organic gemstones. Pearls are produced by oysters, mussels, conch and abalone. Mussels and oysters produce pearls when an irritant accidently enters its shell. This process can also be aided by man by introducing a bead into the mollusk to manufacture cultured pearls.
Pearls can be found in numerous different colors such as white, shades of cream, cream or white with pink overtones, cream or white with green overtones and shades of yellow. Similarly freshwater pearls can be found in colors like white, pink, orange and violet pastels with bronze, gold, and other exotic tones.
Pearls are measured in terms of millimeter of their diameter. Commonly the size of pearls ranges in between 3 to 7 mm. The dimensions of the pearl affects its worth significantly. The larger the size the more costly it is.
When it comes down to shape of the pearl, they are commonly found in four shapes- round, semi round, semi baroques and baroques. However, the round spherical pearls are the most expensive one and as the shape departs from the round the prices drop too. Other pearl shapes include button shapes, drop or pear shapes, and any uniquely shaped piece falling into a baroque classification.
There are different sorts of pearls available to be used to us. Some of the pearls in use are given below.
Natural Pearls: Natural pearls are created by mollusks. These gemstones are found round the Persian Gulf, coast of Vanezuela, Tahiti, Gulf of Manaar, Australia and other warm water areas.
Cultured Pearls: Cultured pearls are produced with a bit of help from humans. In 1910 a method was patented in Japan to make pearls with a little help from human hand. Kokichi Mikimoto led the Japanese cultured pearls growers in the development of this industry.
South Sea Cultured Pearls: These cultured pearls are produced in the same manner to Japanese Cultured pearls in the warm water areas of Australia, Tahiti, Myanmar (Burma), Indonesia, The Philippines and Thailand. Different oysters are used to produce the pearl and can be discovered in colours like silver, black and gold and infrequently rare pink and exotic colours.
