U.S. Rare Earth Metals Mine Reopens To Combat Chinese Monopoly
What was once the biggest rare earth elements mine within the world will come back to life next year. In 2004 Colorado-based Molycorp closed its rare earth mine in California. The company could not compete with the low prices offered through Chinese sources. However, China has began to manipulate supplies, which has brought on prices for rare earth metals to rise dramatically.
Information concerning the Molycorp Mountain Pass mine
The richest source of rare earth elements in the world is the Mountain Pass, CA mine that is dormant and owned by Molycorp. The reason why the Molycorp Mountain Pass mine closed was due to competition from China. There were also some environmental concerns. The national security in the United States and the economic climate is completely threatened now due to the close of the Mountain Pass mine since a monopoly on rare earth metals is what China has now. Molycorp has decided to start producing again after getting the right financing and permits. In 2011, the business will produce about 3,000 tons of rare earth metals processed from ore stockpiled before the mine was closed. There's a different expectation for 2012. About 20,000 tons may be produced.
What the China monopoly looks like
The 2010 global demand for rare earth metals can be measured already. 125,000 tons was the amount. China controls 97 percent of the world's rare earth metals production. Wind turbines, electric automobile batteries, electronic gadgets and military technology all use rare earth metals. Many suspect what China was doing with its rare earths monopoly in 2010. Supposedly geopolitical leverage was the plan. In Europe, Japan and the U.S., High tech manufacturing was stopped for a bit. This was because rare earth metals were cut by more than 70 percent. China reduced taxes for home-based manufacturers. This was for all rare earth metals. Rare earth metals went up in price. There was a 40 percent increase. China can have more clean-energy technology corporations moving there also.
Hoping for a green power economic climate
In order to guarantee a supply of rare earth metals for 7 years, Sumitomo Corp of Japan put $130 million into Molycorp. Within 18 months, production is expected by Molycorp to increase to 40,000 tons. There are currently no businesses in the United States with the expertise to produce emerging technologies -- for instance the neodymium magnets used in wind turbines -- based on rare earth metals in a clean energy economy. But Molycorp has entered a partnership with Hitachi to use bastnasite ore from the Mountain Pass mine to produce neodymium magnets within the U.S. Making neodymium magnets requires a license that only 10 companies in Germany, Japan and China have.
