Earrings Too Expensive For The Young Crowd

All three girls wished they could wear a dress like the ones the sexy movie actresses wore. The gowns they tried on this afternoon were all too revealing. Their parents would not buy them a dress that looked like something out of a playboy magazine.

They stared down at the swarovski earrings with longing. They liked almost every pair in the jewelry case. One pair had oblong emerald green stones with pave diamond chips at the ear lobe. They had seen a green prom dress that would match perfectly they recalled.

Traci thought she had seen a woman wearing a pair just like it at a formal awards dinner earlier that month. They all were impressed by the lovely earrings. They decided white with gold tones would match just about any formal gown.

They laughed and said earrings should always come in threes instead of twos. How often do you lose one of them they wondered. They all agreed that each had lost many earrings even though they were only seventeen.

Now they thought if they each bought identical pairs, they would each lose only one and could take an extra from one another to make a pair. They couldn't lose more than one each. That left at least one matching pair.

They crossed the aisle to the next jewelry case. They admired the necklaces and a group of rhodium earrings there. Traci longingly looked back at the swarovsky earrings she so wished for. None of the girls could afford a hundred dollars for earrings.

She knew that the dress would be expensive enough. She would have to pay for her shoes and evening bag herself according to her mom. She didn't have enough to pay for new earrings in that price range.

The girls moved on after viewing the rest of the earrings. They went out to the food court and bought sodas. Sitting down, they began to lament about how to get rid of acne. This is a topic most teenagers spend a lot of time talking about.

They decided to share a plate of nachos and think about it later. They talked over who they wanted to go to the prom with. Traci was the only one who had a date for sure. But, with the other two girls being on the cheerleading squad, they weren't worried about being asked. If they weren't, they would just go together.

A lot of kids were doing that these days. It was like a rejection of the old traditions. It was like dressing Emo or Goth. Rejecting the parental opinion of what is correct behavior has been a requirement for being a teenager since the beginning of modern culture.
