OLYMPIC MEDALS – BADGES OF HONOUR
With the London Olympics not far away, the world is starting to focus on this magnificent sporting stage.
The winners of the gold medals at the Olympics have achieved the pinnacle of excellence – they’ve been awarded the ultimate badges of supremacy. But not many people know much about the history of these coveted prizes – and there are loads of fascinating facts about the medals that add even more interest to the spectacle of the Olympic Games.
Did you know that at the first Olympic Games of the modern era held in Athens in 1896, the winner actually received a silver medal and not a gold one?. It was only eight years later at the St Louis Olympics that the Games introduced the gold medal as the prize for first place.
The last gold medals that were manufactured entirely from gold were awarded in 1912 – nowadays they are manufactured from a variety of materials, including silver and glass. However, they are required to contain six grams of gold.
The medals are designed by the organising committee of the host city, so are very individual. For example, the medals in 2008 for the Beijing Olympics featured jade inlays and the 1992 ones for the games in Albertville were made mostly from glass. The gold medals for the upcoming London Olympic Games designed by British artist, David Watkins were unveiled recently and feature the Greek Goddess of Victory, Nike, stepping out of the Parthenon to arrive n the host city.
Not all the badges are round either. For example, the 2010 Vancouver medals had an undulating pattern inspired by the mountainous terrain of British Columbia, the ones from the 2006 Turin Games were hollowed-out and the 2002 Salt Lake City ones were octagonal.
And just as every athlete dreams of winning gold, the countries are also vying for the title of ‘most gold medals’. In fact, the most golds ever won in a single Olympics is 83 (US 1984).
