It pays to prepare the ground thoroughly by clearing it of weeds and raking the surface to a fine, crumbly tilth. If you are growing just for cutting, sow in rows in a spare piece of ground, but if you want to make a bright border of hardy annuals, draw your design on the ground with sand or grit. Use the corner of a how or rake to draw shallow drills, but change the direction of the drills from one block to the next to avoid a regimented appearance.
Check the packet for spacing between rows. Scatter the seeds as evenly as possible in each marked out area. If the weather is dry, run water into bottom of each drill first and allow it to soak in. Write and insert a label, then cover the seeds by raking the soil back over the drills. Try not to disturb the seeds unnecessarily. Water the area thoroughly, particularly if the soil is dry and rain is not forecast. Continue to water in dry weather until the seedlings have emerged.
Use a garden fork to lift the clump of tubers, inserting it far enough away to avoid the risk of spearing the tubers. If possible, do this when the soil is fairly dry. Carefully remove as much soil as possible before taking the tubers into a shed or greenhouse to dry off. This will be easier if the soil is not too wet. Narcissus is a welcome sight in spring. Once flowering has finished, the leaves should not be cut back for at least six weeks to allow the bulbs a chance to build up reserves of nutrients ready for flowering the next year.
