Gold is a metallic element, constituting one of the most precious metals used in the common commercial medium of exchange. It has a characteristic yellow color, is one of the most heavy substances, tractile and flexible. It's quite unalterable by heat, moisture, and most corrosive agents.

Pure gold is too soft to hold up to the strains applied to most jewellery items. Craftsmen learned that alloying gold with other metals like copper, silver, and platinum would increase its sturdiness. An alloy of 75 % gold, 16percent silver and 9% copper yields yellow gold. White gold is an alloy of 75 % gold, 4% silver, 4% copper and 17percent palladium.
