From the British Museum's Antiquities to the Met's Art Collection, Time Travel is Possible
Ever wanted to visit the past? It seems that the invention of a time travel machine may still be a few decades (if not more) away, so you'll have to make do with the present. Fortunately there are a number of museums around the world which offer exceptional insight into how people lived in the past. From London's British Museum to the Louvre in Paris - there are a plethora of ways to explore the past. In no particular order, these are just a few of the museums you won't want to miss:
The British Museum – London, England
This museum is home to over 13 million items that represent human history and culture from the beginning of time until now. Probably one of the most comprehensive collections in the entire world, the artefacts of the British Museumdocument represent human history from the beginning of time to present. The collection contains amazing cultural relics from nearly every civilisation in the world – past and present. Two of the top attractions, the Elgin Marbles and the Rosetta Stone need to be on your must-see list. You could literally spend hours here in astonishment at the collection, but two of the best things about this museum are the spectacular design of the Grand Court and the fact that admission is free!
Musee du Louvre – Paris, France
This iconic facade of the Louvre is enough to impress with its gorgeous Renaissance palace juxtaposed by architect I.M. Pei's modern glass pyramid. If that impresses you, just wait until you stumble inside to find some of the world's most celebrated pieces of art. It's easy to spend a lot of time here, as the museum has over 35,000 items on display. Some of the most famous pieces include Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and Alejandro of Antioch’s Venus de Milo.
National Museum of Natural History – Washington D.C., USA
Part of the the Smithsonian Institute, this museum draws in visitors of all ages. Children and adults alike will enjoy the great hall of dinosaurs - one of the museum's most popular exhibits. Throughout this grand space you’ll find over 125 million specimens of plants, animals, fossils, minerals, rocks, meteorites and human cultural artefacts. Be sure to visit the museum’s outdoor butterfly garden, which has four different habitats and is open all year round (though the summer months are the best). The attractions here are endless but don’t leave without getting a glimpse at the impressive Hope Diamond.
The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities – Cairo, Egypt
If you have an interest in ancient Egypt, this museum will not disappoint. This museum is home to too many artefacts to count, however many are rotated for display but there's an average of 120,000 on view. One of the most popular rooms is the the Royal Mummy Room, which houses nine mummies including that of the famous Queen Hatshepsut. Also be sure to check out the 1,200 objects from the tomb of King Tut, including the legendary solid gold death mask.
The Metropolitan Museum of Arts – New York City, USA
Probably the USA's most notable art museum, the Met is something not to be missed. The extensive collection spans several continents and periods of artistic movements. You may even call it an art lover's paradise as this collection includes pieces ranging from ancient Egypt through to modern day America, and of course many more. This museum is home to paintings from everyone including Caravaggio to Constable and Monet to Matisse.
