Nick Hubbard Benefits from Hazel Blears' Resignation
Ever since the resignation of Hazel Blears, one day before the local and European elections, part of her fashion choice has been widely reported about. The piece in question was her brooch.
When the former Community Secretary resigned she was wearing a small brooch which featured the slogan "rocking the boat", and this is exactly what she was doing when she chose to resign just a day before the local and European elections. This is why it has become such a news story simply because, was she aware that she was wearing an item that would make such a political statement, and if she was, was her resignation a direct challenge to Gordon Brown.
For one man, this bit of political news has proven to be extremely good for business. That man is the designer behind the brooch, Nick Hubbard.
Mr Hubbard is the designer of this piece and I don't think ever in his dreams he would have imagined that this small piece of jewellery would have been splashed over newspapers and radio programmes. The entire incident has provided Mr Hubbard with alot of free publicity that every PR firm would dream of.
Mr Hubbard runs his own business along side his wife Jean in their studio in Staffordshire. He creates every one of his jewellery pieces by hand using local materials and traditional methods. As for the brooch in question, it's a piece of silver jewellery made from oxidized silver, gold and hand painted details. It features a dog and a cat sitting in a small boat on the water with the words "rocking the boat" around the outer rim. There is a small lever on the right hand side of the brooch that, when triggered, rocks the pair inside the boat.
Mr Hubbard doesn't believe that she was unaware of the political statement that the jewellery suggested: "I think her intentions were clear", and really, if she didn't want to create a statement, she could have worn a different piece, like some amethst jewellery.
Hazel Blears is not the only well known person to have been seen wearing an item of jewellery from Mr Hubbard. Jill Murphy, Virginia McKenna, Frances De La Tour, Roddy Doyle, Sue Townsend, Alison Weir and Nicholas Hytner are just a few of the well known people who have bought a piece of Mr Hubbards jewellery over his 30 year career.
