EASY TIPS FOR BEAUTIFUL FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS
Arranging flowers can seem a little daunting for a novice as there are so many different shapes and styles to choose from – long, round, compact, triangular, crescent, s-shaped, posies, cascading arrangements to name just a few.
It can even be a little tricky taking a professionally arranged bouquet of flowers from a florist and putting it into a container at home. Know the feeling?
Don’t sweat the small stuff. These basic guidelines will put you on track to creating your own beautiful bunches. And remember, rules are there to be broken, so once you’ve mastered the basics, have fun and experiment to create your own individual style. The more you practice, the more confidence you’ll have to put together unique creations that beautify any space and bring pleasure to others.
There are basic elements to consider such as texture, scale, space, accent, harmony, unity and balance. This may sound a bit technical, but it will make more sense as you go along.
First up, choose flowers you love. You can use varieties that have similar colours, or one kind of flower (monochromatic), or a mix of a single variety with fillers or put together an eclectic and colourful mix of different kinds of flowers. Most times, complementary colours are the best. The idea is to create balance and equilibrium and if there are too many dark flowers, they will overpower the light ones. Another basic rule is to use an odd number of focal flowers as the base layer, and then build from there.
Before you start, think about the overall effect that you’re trying to achieve, the angle it will be seen from and where the arrangement will be placed in the home. Tall arrangements are dramatic whereas a full, round arrangement is generally more traditional and evokes a sense of warmth. Interior decorating magazines and books, websites of florists in Perth and home décor programmes on TV will provide heaps of inspiring ideas.
Choose a container first. There are no rules here – but obviously it will have to suit the type of flower you’re arranging. There’s no limit to what you can use – from old tins and jars, bottles, baskets, glasses, jugs, teapots or pedestals. A basic cylindrical vase is the simplest, a square or rectangular one is more contemporary and a ceramic one will be good for more ‘countrified’ arrangements. Proportion is always a consideration when choosing the container.
When you start, put the focal flowers (usually the largest and most eye-catching) in the centre. Usually, the longest stems are cut between 1 – 2 times the height of the vase, but it’s really about balance and proportion. Flowers are then added from the biggest to the smallest, with the foliage or greenery going in at the end. Cut stems at different lengths to create depth. Generally, varieties with narrower flowers and buds (eg gladiolus) look better when the stems are kept longer in a taller vase and full flowers look best when cut a few centimeters above the rim on the container.
Fillers (eg foliage, leaves, flowers) are used to fill the gaps and create height, width and texture. A filler flower looks wonderful if it has small blossoms and small leaves (eg gypsophila). The foliage should ideally be at the centre and back of the arrangement in order to keep the balance.
It’s also worth distancing yourself from your creation every now and then in order to view it from afar. Artists do it all the time to look at the perspectives, the composition, the light and balance etc. Don’t forget – you’re the artist here!
