Serendipity Diamonds – Determining the Type of Cut
If you are searching for a diamond ring, a pair of earrings, a bracelet, or some other diamond jewellery, you often go to a reputable jewellery establishment like Serendipity Diamonds. As you go over the glittering displays of diamond-encrusted jewellery, you can’t help but see that lots of the diamonds share the same general forms even if the bands and metals that hold them are in limitless designs.
Before they are made into the focal points of jewels, diamonds, which are initially in the form of shapeless stones, have to be cut and polished. The Gemological Institute of America classifies these diamonds into categories. These categories are based on how the jewel’s facets, the flat faces of the stone, are positioned.
1. Brilliant cut
A diamond with a brilliant cut has facets that are shaped like kites and triangles. These facets are oriented outside and are intentionally positioned so that light that pours through them is reflected all over the stone. Quite simply, the facets improve the reflection and refraction of light, making the diamond sparkle.
The most widely known version of a brilliant cut diamond is the round diamond, followed by the square-shaped princess cut. Normally, a round or princess cut diamond has a total of 58 facets however, this can differ, especially in vintage brilliant cut diamonds.
2. Step cut
A jewel with a step cut is generally rectangular in shape. It has sloping, four-sided facets that are cut beneath the stone’s table. These facets also run parallel to the diamond’s girdle. A step cut diamond often has fewer facets than brilliant-cut diamonds.
A well known form of step cut stones is the emerald cut in which the corners of the rectangular diamond are cut off. The Asscher Cut is a version of the emerald cut in which the diamond is square shaped instead of rectangular.
3. Mixed cut
Often used on other types of stones than diamonds, mixed cuts have faceting elements found in both brilliant and step cuts. The facets can be seen on the sides or even in different areas of the diamond.
