The True Story About Marie Antoinette Ear-rings
There's no more interesting subject in history than the condemned French Queen Marie Antoinette. Much maligned by history (she never announced "Let them eat cake," in response to the people's need for bread), she was a unwilling part of the one of the best revolutions in history. And met a badly timed end at the guillotine in 1793. While she loved jewelry, and possessed many wonderful jewels, she often preferred straightforward muslin robes and very little jewellery. Many of the portraits of her by Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun show her robed just like that.
2 giant, pear-shaped adamant ear rings, weighing 14.25 and 20.34 carats respectively, are part of the Smithsonian Institution's collection. The diamonds once were supposedly set in earrings that where owned by Marie Antoinette and some sources say they were her favorite pieces of jewelry and she was wearing them consistently. She lost them during an effort to leave France as the Revolution dawned and the position of the Royals became dangerous.
The admants were later bought by the Grand Duchess Tatiana Yousupoff of Russia. When jeweller Pierre Cartier bought the diamond earrings in 1928, their genuineness was attested to in an affidavit by Russian Princess Zenaide Yousupoff and her child, Prince Felix Yousupoff, stating that they originally belonged to Queen Marie-Antoinette and haven't ever been reset in the 100 years that they were owned by the family.
Marjorie Merriweather Post purchased the earrings from Pierre Cartier in October 1928. Harry Winston, well known for his Harry Winston Engagement Rings collection, reset the large diamonds in platinum copies of the first silver settings in 1959. Cartier, Inc. Created the triangular tops.
In Nov 1964, Mrs. Post's daughter, Mrs. Eleanor Barzin, donated the earrings, along with the original setting to the Smithsonian Establishment. The diamonds are originally from India or Brazil, the sole heavy sources of diamonds in the 1700's.
