The Role Of Topical Medication In Genital Warts Treatment
Genital warts are a major concern for the persons who are having them. The genital warts may not be visibly noticed, but their presence gives a tingling sensation, which is very bothersome. If a genital wart treatment is causes some scars then it may not be liked by most people. A majority of people who are suffering from genital warts would want to get rid of the genital warts with the help of topical medication. The topical medications are for external use only and are not consumed internally.
Human papillomavirus enters the body through direct skin-to-skin contact during the sexual activities, be they genital, anal or oral. Once the virus enters the cells, it may remain latent for years without any manifestation. The warts may or may not come out at all. The body’s immune system may or may not clear the HPV infection on its own. It is said that although 15% to 20% of the sexually active population carries the virus, only 1% of them have visible warts. Those who do not have visible wart can still be transmitting the virus. So you can never be sure if your partner is carrying HPV or not. That is the most dangerous part of it.
There are different methods of getting rid of the visible warts, but only immunological responses can clear HPV or at least keep it under control. Let us now concentrate on visible warts, but also keep the HPV in view because as long as the virus remains active in the body the warts will keep appearing. Visible warts can be removed through topical lotions, gels and creams or through surgery or cauterization. If the warts are within reach, the patient can himself apply the topical medications. However, s/he must remember that these medications are for external use only and should not the used on the soft membranes in the interior part of the body.
The success of the genital warts treatment using topical ointments depends largely on the patient himself. The instructions should be followed to the letter. Skipping the schedules from time to time or applying it more than it has been prescribed will harm you equally. Consult your doctor before taking any other medicine. Drug interaction may cause severe side effects. However, if the doctor himself prescribes any other drug that has to be used in tandem you can do so without qualms because the doctor must be aware of the ingredient of each and will not prescribe anything that will interact to produce unwanted side effects.
Podofilox is the first line of genital wart medication due to its low cost, but the medicines included in this group cannot be used to treat genital warts inside the vagina, penis or rectum. They can however, be used to treat warts on the external skin of vagina or penis. Do not use the cream more often or for a longer period than it is being prescribed. Excessive use will not make your warts better, but will cause horrible side effects. Besides, it may not be safe for those who have allergies to medicine. Pregnant women and breast feeding mothers must let the doctor know about their condition before they can take such medicines.
You will not have much trouble if you are careful and follow the doctor’s advice to the letter and spirit. However, many people are careless and take these medicines as mere lotions and creams. They apply such medicines whenever they wish and in whatever quantity they wish and suffer violent side effects as a result. If you are pregnant or if you are breast-feeding your baby, or become pregnant during the course of the treatment, let your doctor know about it. Genital wart medication may harm the fetus and cause defect at birth. Their effect on lactation is not clear and the doctor may not want to take a chance.
Podofilox 0.5% is the cheapest available genital wart medication. It is indicated for topical treatment of external genital warts, not for perianal or mucous membrane warts. Exceeding the recommended amount of the medication, the frequency of application, the duration of usage does not mean early cure, but intolerable side effects. Read the Patient Information Leaflet carefully before embarking on the treatment. Overdose may cause burning, pain, inflammation, itching and even erosion of skin. So be careful.
Extended use of the medication is not advisable as it may have adverse effects on the body. Also, this medication contains alcohol and so it must not be brought to any open flame. The application of the Podofilox lotion or gel is done by using the applicator that is often available with the medication. If you misplace or lose the applicator then you can try a cotton-tipped applicator which you can make at home as well. When you are using the applicator, ensure that the Podofilox lotion or gel is applied uniformly.
