Jade is a beautiful semi-precious stone. Its pale green color is the best known, and this is easily distinguishable from other stones. Jade is very popular in jewelry and other accessories. Jade earrings are some of the most popular uses for the stone. One big reason is that since earrings are generally small, very fine pieces of jade that aren’t large enough for other pieces of jewelry can be used in them. On the other hand, earrings can be large enough to allow the artistry and natural beauty of the stone show clearly.
What to Look For
There are many things you should check for when you are thinking about buying jade earrings. Just like any semi-precious stone, there is good quality jade and poor quality jade. Also, the jade itself isn’t the only thing you should check for.
Different Colors of Jade
Something you should keep in mind if you are shopping for jade earrings is that jade does come in many colors. The pale green is the most common and most popular color, but purple, white, yellow, grey, black, orange and brown aren’t uncommon. Purple jade is referred to as ‘lavender’ jade, due to the light color is usually has.
Identifying Good Jade
When you are shopping for jade, one of the best things to look for is rich color. Whether it is green or one of the other colors, the hue should be vibrant. If it seems dull, it probably isn’t very good jade. Also, if it has some transparency, allowing light to shine through at least at the edges, it is more likely to be a fine product.
Since jade often has many nuances when it comes to color and texture, your best bet is to buy it from reputable dealers. Keep in mind that it is a precious stone; if the price of a piece of jade seems too good to be true, it likely is.
Shapes and Craftsmanship
There are many different shapes that jewelers craft jade into. The shape doesn’t affect the value of the piece so much as the quality of the craftsmanship. If the image is very clear, this is a sign of good work. It is also good if both earrings are almost exactly the same size and color.
If you can pick up the pieces before you buy them, check for rough spots. These are also signs of poor make.
Check the Metal
Even if a piece of jade is very nice, the earrings can be ruined if they are not made of a nice metal. See what metal was used for them, and make sure the setting holds the stone tightly. This way you don’t have to worry so much that you will lose the stone.
Do Some Shopping
While the best jade earrings will be expensive, you can find some that are nice but don’t cost an arm and a leg. It is easy to find jade earrings that range from $50 all the way to thousands of dollars depending on the quality and size of the jade piece, along with the history of the earrings.
Once you buy a set of jade earrings you will be glad you did your homework and took a good look before you made a decision.
