The Marquise Diamond
The Marquise cut diamond is one of the more elegant and traditional diamond shapes. The Marquise is a slim oval shape with tapered pointed tips. The Marquise is a heavier stone than many others – while a rough diamond will produce a round brilliant diamond of a certain size, when cutting it into a marquise shape, it will generally produce a diamond up to 50% larger in carat size.
The Marquise cut is considered a “fancy cut diamond”, and it’s shape is similar to that of a football. It is called “marquise” because King Louis XIV of France supposedly had a diamond cut into this shape to resemble the shape of the mouth of his beloved Marquise of Pompadour.
The Marquise has the largest, or among the largest, of crown surfaces of any diamond, helping it give the illusion that the diamond is larger than it really is. This allows you to even buy a slightly smaller stone and still retain the perception of larger. As well, the shape of the diamond makes the shape of the finger wearing it seem longer and slimmer.
The Marquise diamond is considered best with a length to width ratio of about 2:1 (the best range is considered from 1:75:1 to 2.25:1). Anything below or above those numbers will start to look either to narrow and thin or to squat and fat. The cut of a marquise stone has to be very precise and symmetrical. The pointy tips should be precisely even and opposite each other. If they are even slightly off, the diamond will look completely skewed and lopsided after it is set into a ring.
When buying diamonds online, it can be difficult to evaluate the issues that might be considered flaws in the diamond. They can be hard to evaluate from just a page of specifications. Here are some of the things you need to pay attention to.
Something to be careful about when buying a Marquise diamond is the Girdle. You must be cautious about a thin Girdle. If the Girdle is too thin, it will be prone to chipping. As well, when setting the Marquise diamond, one must be careful to protect the tips of the diamond, as they are generally the most exposed and are very prone to chipping. The best way to protect them is to use a setting that has v-shaped prongs. When the v-shaped prongs cover the tips, one can ignore any internal flaws (inclusions) that are located at the ends, as they will be covered by the prongs and not visible.
Regarding the recommended color range of the Marquise diamond, one has a bit more flexibility with the Marquise. As always, it is difficult to give an objective guide to the preferred color level of a diamond, as it is a very subjective rating. Some people like the colorless or near colorless look more, and others prefer the “warmer” look of a tiny tinge of color in the stone. The generally accepted preferred range though for Marquise is that the best colors are up to the G-H range, with many actually preferring the side of the warmer G and H colors levels more so than the cooler and more “icey” level of more colorless levels.
Another factor to consider is that when the diamond is a larger diamond, the Marquise at times will appear a bit darker at the tips. If buying a larger Marquise diamond, one might consider bumping the color grade up a level, such as choosing a G instead of H color, or F instead of G.
One last, but not least, factor to be concerned about is the “bow-tie effect”. The bow-tie is fairly common in the elongated shapes of diamonds. It is a dark patch that stretches from side to side across the diamond, in the shape of a bow-tie. The bow-tie effect happens when the facets are not aligned properly. When the light leaks out because of the misalignment of the facets, it creates the appearance of a dark area, in the shape of a bow-tie. The bow-tie can appear strongly, or very light, depending on how misaligned the facets are and how much light is leaking out instead of being refracted back.
