Drusy Quartz – Sparkling Crystal Gems & Jewelry
Drusy or druzy is the name commonly given to crystals that form on the inside a mineral cavity such as found inside an amethyst geode or covering an agate. For jewelry-making purposes, drusy is commonly seen in free form, organic shapes because of the intense handwork and labor required to produce fine calibrated cabochons. The fragile crystal layer is so delicate, handling and cutting must be done with extreme care and skill to prevent damage. Size and evenness of the crystal coverage is a determining factor in calculating the value of drusy gemstone – whether natural or treated.
Treated or enhanced drusy that has been dyed or vapor-coated is prominently used for fashion jewelry as well as stones that have a metallic coating. Many of the iridescent blues and shimmering greens of color treated stones have been created using a patented vapor process developed by Azotic Coating Technologies Inc. of Rochester, Minnesota. In recent years, designer drusy has become very popular as matching jewelry collections that feature small calibrated stones in earrings and bracelets and larger, matching cabochons in rings and pendants.
Drusy quartz is 100% natural quartz stone that has an agate (quartz) base and a top thin layer of crystalline quartz. The miniature crystals make the stones look like they are covered with fine sugar or snow. This unique glittering texture is what makes drusy quartz so attractive and fascinating to jewelry lovers. Its affordable price and natural appeal when set in sterling silver makes it favorite for anyone looking to add something different to their jewelry collection.
