We like to decorate our ears and it is understandable why we buy pearl earrings to accentuate our finer features. Pearl earrings can look stunning on ladies of all ages and it doesn’t matter what face you have, pearls complement it perfectly. Of course, something as beautiful as pearl earrings don’t ever date or look off-trend and that’s why people buy them to add to their jewellery collection. But where did the passion for earrings come from? Is it a new thing? Not at all, and research suggests that women have always enjoyed this form of body decoration, which is why earrings are still a popular choice today.
In our fast-paced modern cultures our ears provide one of the easiest and most prominent body parts to adorn. With the jewellery that women wear, moods and expressions can be portrayed through the use of earrings. We buy pearl earrings simply because they are the perfect way to make us look young, sophisticated and give us a glowing complexion.
Earrings have been around forever, or so it seems. The oldest known earrings are the Lunate earrings. The Lunate earrings were found in the region of Ur in Mesopotamia, which is more commonly known now as Iraq. These earrings are very ancient, and are estimated to be 4500 years old. Earrings have come a long way since then, of course. For a start, the developed worlds don’t use bone anymore, which was a common choice all those years ago, but we do still use gold which has transcended many jewellery boundaries and remains a popular choice today.
The popularity of earrings rose and fell throughout the ages in direct relation to hairstyles. You only need to consider the Middle Ages when earrings lost popularity slightly. It was considered immoral for respectable married women to be seen in public with their heads uncovered. However, by the time the mid 1500s had arrived, earrings had a made a comeback since women were allowed to wear their hair up and show their ears. Earrings resurged and continued to gain popularity for years later, where pearls became a middle-class desirable option.
Nowadays, there are people from all walks of life wearing all sorts of earrings. You can pick up pretty much any style of earring your heart desires, although silver and gold remain the most popular. Earrings are all about expression and many see jewellery as an art form. Despite all the different types of earrings, it is pearl earrings that are the most popular choice.
