How Was Jewelry Used In Ancient Roman Times?
Since ancient times, jewelry has been a significant symbol of might and beauty across cultures. Jewelry had a variety of functions in different communities, including social, political, ornamental and religious purposes. Jewelry has helped us understand the kind of lives people lived in ancient times. Ancient Rome was among many civilizations to use jewelry.
For the ancient Rome, status and power was demonstrated with jewelry. The citizens of ancient Rome belonged to various economic classes and jewelry worn be people was a way to identify their class. Women decorated stolas with precious metal and the men did the same with their togas.
One of the most valued jewelry among ancient Romans was gold. Gold was refined from ore to make a variety of artifacts and adornments. Gold was considered to be sent from the sun by God and was used by the higher classes. Other materials were also used such as precious gems, bronze, and glass. Materials were brought in from many places in the world such as Mesopotamia and the far East.
As the Roman Empire flourished, so did their jewelry. Over time the middle class had more access to jewelry where as the originally it was mostly only available to the higher classes. Jewelry then started becoming a sign of beauty rather than a sign of power and status. Many cultures such as the Egyptians and Greeks influenced jewelry in Rome. Rome had interation with many other cultures as part of their trade and conquests. The Heracles knot, for example, was used by the Egyptians but was than used by the Romans to guard agains evil spirits.
When the Roman Empire grew to include the Mediterranean region, jewelry designs, especially the glass jewelry became quite popular among the communities living in northern Africa, southern Europe, Middle East and Egypt, among other places. The inhabitants of these regions also adapted the Roman Art of jewelry, which remains evident to this date.
Armlets, necklaces, rings, and bracelets were some popular types of jewelry. Roman senators, bureaucrats and other dignitaries in the empire wore huge glass rings adorned with gold and precious gemstones as a sign of their status. However, during the reign of Justian I only a few were allowed to wear gold rings. However, gold bracelets were popular among wealthy women as bracelets had no restrictions; these bracelets were worn for decoration.
It was very popular to wear jewelry on clothing. Precious gems were oftern worn in the hair but also found on shoes and dresses. Valuable artifacts were also common in households and furniture for decorative purposes. Although not as common as in ancient times, some jewelry holds some special meanings to date. However, just like culture keeps evolving, so does ancient Roman jewelry.
