I love amethyst rings, how about you? I think it is that gorgeous dark purple color that gets me every time. I don’t necessarily want to paint a room in my house purple, but when it comes to gemstones, purple can’t be beat! Some amethysts are not necessarily that lovely dark purple color, however. Some are lighter pinkish purple, and some are even green. They were named for a character in Greek mythology named Amethystos, and have a long history of being associated with royalty and riches.
Amethyst belongs to the family of quartz gemstones. Aluminum and iron are thought to give amethyst its unique, deep purple color. There are, however, many different shades of amethyst stones. An amethyst ring can come in the color range of light pinkish-purple, to the deeper purple shade that is more common. You may also come across a green amethyst ring, which is very rare in nature, but may be created by heating an amethyst and are called lime citrine. Yellow amethyst stones are often created in this way. Amethysts were once on the list of precious gemstones that includes diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires, but a large deposit of amethyst was found in Brazil that caused the value if amethyst to go down. They are now considered to be semi-precious stones. Because they are very hard, and actually rate a 7 on the Mohs Scale, they are wonderful for creating jewelry such as amethyst engagement rings and other jewelry that will be worn continuously, and for long periods of time.
Something to look for in a good quality amethyst ring is a transparent stone. Some rings are made with lower quality translucent stones. These rings are also very beautiful, but should cost less than an amethyst ring with a clear stone. Light cannot travel through a translucent amethyst, and so it won’t have that beautiful purple “glow” about it. Always make sure you purchase a 14K or 10K gold setting, or a sterling silver setting. Other metals may not be sturdy enough to hold the stone securely. Prices of sterling Silver Amethyst rings start around $25, and gold amethyst rings will start somewhere around $150 to $175. The larger the stone, and the fewer flaws an amethyst stone has will increase the price of a ring considerably, so keep that in mind. Amethyst engagement rings have recently become very popular, and should always be set in 14 or 10K gold, to ensure that the ring will be able to withstand the continuous wear and tear that a ring worn for long periods of time will get.
Amethyst rings are beautiful, and affordable. You should always shop for them at reputable stores, whether online or in person. Sterling silver and gold make the best settings for any gemstone rings, so make sure you stick with that. Happy shopping!
